Raised Bed Vegetable Garden

We were invited to add to this wonderful vegetable garden in Harrison (Westchester County). The homeowner is an experienced gardener, and our task was to add pollinator perennials, companion plants, herbs, and berry bushes to the raised bed garden.

This garden has it all, from a drip irrigation system to herbs and companion plants that keep pests away and help the veggies thrive.

Companion plants like marigolds, borage, nasturtiums, chives, scallions and dill attract beneficial insects and deter common pests. A few examples:

- Planting dill with cucumbers helps attract ladybugs, which eat aphids.
- Planting borage attracts bees which pollinate tomatoes and other veggies.
- Planting nasturtiums draws hungry caterpillars away from brassica like broccoli and kale.
